  20. The precise answer to his third question is "barely".  It turns out that
  21. the source code to Macintalk has been lost for many years (Apple bought
  22. the binary program from a small company, which then proceeded to go bust
  23. and disappear, leaving them with no source).  They were able to patch the
  24. binary to keep up with small changes, but when System 7 came out, the
  25. sound architecture was changed so much that Macintalk no longer really worked,
  26. and the folks at Apple didn't feel like continuing any work on that turkey.
  27. HOWEVER, the folks who do the Talking Moose managed to patch the binary to
  28. make it work.  It isn't clear how much longer they'll be able to keep it
  29. going as the System changes, but with luck, they won't have to:  Apple has
  30. been promising a brand new speech-synthesis architecture (written by them,
  31. so this time they can keep fixing it :-) for several months (in fact, I think
  32. since System 7 came out).  The new speech-synthesizer is supposed to sound
  33. much more like a natural voice (rather than, say, a Canadian moose with
  34. nasal congestion :-).
