- He is talking about the DX2 66mhz chip. It runs at 66mhz internally and
- 33mhz externally. That way, a person who has a machine with a 33mhz bus can
- pop the new chip in and get a vast improvement in performance. Depending
- on what kinds of applications you run, the actual performance boost
- varies. For me, I noticed almost a doubling of performance in ray tracing
- (under OS/2), but no big shakes for spreadsheets and word processing.
- However, it seems to make a HUGE difference when I'm running unix on my
- machine. Processing 500K of compressed news batches only takes about
- a minute and compiles are very fast.
-
- This clock doubling technology thing is nothing new. Motorola chips
- have been doing it for a long time...they just don't make a big deal
- out of it.
-
- The bottom line: If you don't have any heavy math or mpu piggy
- programs to run, you're probably better off spending your hard
- earned bucks on a faster hard disk or more memory.
-
- Cheers,
