- Having had similar problems with my 1084 I may be able to
- help here. I`ll describe the TWO faults thet occured in mine.
-
- 1) Click and die, like the problem described, the
- monitor would make a click noise and then rapidly
- die i.e. the picture would suddenly go off.
-
- 2) Fade away, this started aboult half a year after I
- had cured 1). This time the picture would slowly fade
- out as if somebody was turning the brightness down.
-
- Both of these troubles turned out to be due to dry joints.
- Hence hitting the monitor is a short term solution since it may
- temporarily remake the circuit but not for long. These troubles are
- easily cured by a quick attack with the soldering iron. In the first
- case the trouble area was the HT circuitry (one of the large
- capacitors). And in the second case the joints to the CRT heater
- were dodgy.
-
- Since the quality of soldering on 1084s in general doesn`t
- seem to be too good, it would probably do no harm to quickly
- resolder almost all of the joints near a fault while you have the
- back off. A rudimentary knowledge of the workings of a monitor
- combined with the circuit diagram suplied with it should be enough
- to guide you to near enough the right part of the circuit board.
