-
- For starters, there are several modulation methods currently in use. For
- high speed (9600 and higher) the common ones are v.32 (9600), v.32bis
- (14400 backward compatable with v.32), HST (9600 to 16800, depending on
- how old the modem is, backward compatable with older HST's). HST is
- only used by US Robotics, but v.32 and v.32bis are used by the majority of
- modem manufacturers. The USR Courier Dual Standard will connect with both
- HST and v.32 (and v.32bis on newer models)
-
- The problem with HST modems is that they can only connect at 9600+ with
- other HST's. Likewise v.32/v.32bis modems can only connect at high speed
- with other v.32/v.32bis modems. Since v.32bis modems are quite inexpensive,
- I would recommend going v.32bis unless you mostly call HST systems. If you
- regularly call both v.32/v.32bis and HST systems you might want to check
- out the USR Dual Standard, however it is quite expensive.
-
- Two of my co-workers have and swear by Bocca v.32bis modems (one has an
- external, one has an internal. Both are running BBSes on MS-DOS based
- machines)
-
- About the only modem I wouldn't recommend Practical Perhipherals, as two
- local BBS sysops have tried them (one sent his back, and the other might
- if he can't get it working right soon).
