- At some installations, computer operators are de facto system managers.
- At others it's a menial job, and at still others it's somewhere in between.
- Some VAX systems run quite well with no operators at all - everybody just
- pitches in. Our operators keep forms in the printers, run backups, and
- deliver reports - and that's pretty much all they do. They're not
- qualified to do much else, and their learning potential is limited, but
- those are useful functions so we keep them on.
-
- Computer operator is usually an entry-level position; you don't really know
- much about the people you hire so you're careful about the privileges you
- give them. Once an operator has demonstrated trustworthiness and capability
- though, that operator should be allowed to grow in the job. Some
- supervisors may think operators are likely to start hacking around in the
- system if they're given more privileges. The "full privs" you want can be
- dangerous if you don't have system management training or experience, but
- that training and experience can be gained in increments on the job. After
- all, most of us started out on the bottom rung of the ladder.
