- I've seen this kind of thing happen if your tar file is not the
- right format file characteristics. "Right" in this case means
- fixed-512; others (esp. variable length) can cause this kind
- of grief. More recent vmstar versions are much more forgiving
- than the older ones in this regard, but I've seen compression programs
- that need "binary" switches to generate the tar files without extra
- cruft in the middle that causes the tar headers to get moved out
- of the right place and/or corrupted. Since tar generally gives
- up when it finds an invalid header, only the first file, whose
- header has not been mislocated, survives.
- Remedies may require re-decompression, or may just need use of
- the FILE command. Removing the "impliedcc" attribute from a tar
- file is a good first step...
