  18.         There is a reason unix doesn't send some escape sequence out and see
  19. what comes back.  That is because different terminals use different escape
  20. sequences for the command to return the terminal type.  Other terminals don't
  21. have such a command.  Escape sequences for some terminals lock up other
  22. terminals.  Its really frustrating to the user to lock up their Banna-10
  23. terminal while checking to see if it responds to the ANSI escape sequence.

  25.         Lowest common denominator. at least for the U.S., says that about the
  26. only thing that is safe to send out before the computer knows what kind of
  27. terminal it is talking to is, is 7-bit ascii (typically only printable and
  28. control characters).
