- SNOW COVER MAPPING AT NOHRSC
-
- Many new images of the US and Canada are available
- via anonymous ftp from snow.nohrsc.nws.gov. When
- we collect an overpass from NOAA-11, we first make
- a 4x4 reduction of band 1 of the entire pass. If
- any of our 26 1000x1000 km mapping windows are
- relatively cloud-free, we extract bands 1-4 at
- full 1100 m resolution, calibrate it to %albedo
- and temperature and register it to Albers projection.
- At this point, a JPEG image is made of bands 1, 3 & 4
- contrast normalized and taken as RG&B in a false-color
- composite. This image is posted to pub/jpg on
- snow.nohrsc.nws.gov.
- If the snowline is clearly visible, the image not
- too cloudy and the registration within a few pixels,
- and we haven't mapped it recently, then we map
- snow cover. Each image is nudged a few pixels if
- necessary to align it to a master image and has a
- cosine correction applied band 1 to account for sunangle.
- In windows over the Rockies and in Alaska, the slope
- and aspect of each pixel is figured into the solar
- normalization.
- The difference of bands 3 and 4 is computed and converted
- to byte and compared to normalized band 1 to make a
- scatter diagram. From this, we derive the parameters
- we use to perform the classification into SNOW, LAND and
- CLOUD.
- This image, when run thru a GIS, is further subdivided
- into elevation zones, and the percent area of each type
- in each zone is calculated, formatted into a SHEF message
- and sent to users around the country via AFOS. The class-
- ified image is converted to GIF and put in the BBS.
- Users can access the data either by modem to (612) 725-3230
- (1200/2400/9600/19200) or via the Internet to
- snow.nohrsc.nws.gov in pub/bbs. Notes on the process, FAQs
- and viewing utilities are also available. Users without
- ftp access should inquire about BITFTP, receiving uuencoded
- data by email.
