- The COMM WEEK Editorial warns Stratacom, AT&T, and cisco about using
- their new partnership as an advantage over other ATM vendors.
-
- I disagree. The three WAN pioneers are in a position to pursue the
- only validated market for ATM products, and should be encouraged to
- pursue these goals without inhibition. The ATM vendors groups have
- agreed on the essential elements of cell-relay, and to hold individual
- companies to some standards forum beyond its usefulness does the
- customer a disadvantage.
-
- Later when the knowledge base or multi-media market opens up, other of
- the ATM vendors can break off and pursue these markets.
-
- We have already seen that some differences in flow control, call
- set up, and adaptation standards will become part of the separate
- markets. As long as the essential elements remain, and vendors
- occasionally re-join to fix remaining interface standards, then let them go.
