- Taking the modem off-hook gives a busy indication to the calling party,
- freeing up (telco) switch resources faster than if you merely stopped
- answering the phone. Also, those people calling long distance through
- unscrupulous long distance service providers (like Telesphere, MCI, Sprint,
- etc.) won't be hit so bad for ring-no-answers (charges for calls not
- completed).
