-
- For Northern California the reports are available via the following two
- ways in addition to on USENET.

-
- Announcing two old services:
-
- The Northern California, USA, and World weekly seismicity report is now
- available via anonymous ftp and a mailing list. The info on them is below.
-
- ANONYMOUS FTP
-
- To get the report via anonymous ftp give the command:
- % ftp garlock.wr.usgs.gov (also known as [130.118.120.28])
- for the login name use "anonymous" (without the quotes)
- for the password give your email address
- then do the following commands
- ftp> cd pub/WEEKREPS (this puts you in the directory that contains the
- weekly reports in a variety of subdirectories
- described below.)
- to get the most current report do the following command
- ftp> cd LATEST
- ftp> get weekmap.dos (gets the report)
- to get the gif files or postscript files try
- ftp> binary
- ftp> mget *.gif (for the gif files)
- ftp> mget *.ps.Z (for the raster postscript files compressed)
-
- To get individual files or past reports read the descriptions below
- and use the get commands you need.
-
- The pub/WEEKREPS/README file:
-
- These directories contain the weekly seismicity reports and
- maps for Northern California, the US, and the World. Each
- weeks reports are in a subdirectory named for the day the
- report was stored. The name is of the form yymmmdd, where
- yy is the last two digits of the year, mmm is a three letter
- code for the month (e.g. Jan), and dd is the date. Note that
- this date will be after the end of the report.
-
- NOTE: The most recent directory will also be linked to the
- name LATEST, so you can just give the command "cd LATEST"
- to get to the most current report.
-
- Each directory contains several files:
- weekmap.dos : the weekly report in ascii
-
- *.gif : the maps in gif format, these almost always include:
- sfbay.gif (the San Francisco Bay area)
- cencal.gif (Central and Northern California)
- lvc.gif (Long Valley Caldera in Eastern California)
- world.gif (the world)
- and sometimes include:
- usa.gif (the USA).
-
- *.ps.Z : the maps mentioned above in raster postscript format. These
- files have been compressed with the Unix utility compress.
-
- Remember that both the *.gif and *.ps.Z files are binary and you need
- to give the binary command to ftp before uploading them. See the
- ftp documentation for details.
-
- Occasionally other files will be included, take a look.
-
- There is no set date when the files will be deleted. I will try
- to keep them around for a few months, but will delete them based
- on my disk space requirements. In most cases I will delete the
- *.ps.Z files first, then the *.gif files, and then as late as possible
- the weekmap.dos files.
-
- For information on how to view the *.gif files see the file
- in this directory called howtogif.
-
- MAILING LIST INFORMATION:
-
- The ascii text and the uuencoded gif files will be available via a mail list.
- For now, the postscript will not be available via mail because the files
- are rather large.
-
- To subscribe to the mailing list send mail to:
- michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov
- with the subject line: WEEKLY REPORT MAIL LIST
- if you want the ascii text put this line in the body:
- ASCII TEXT: <email address here>
- if you want the Northern California maps in uuencoded gif format
- put this line in the body of the message:
- NORCAL MAPS: <email address here>
- if you want the USA and World maps in uuencoded gif format
- put this line in the body of the message:
- USA and WORLD MAPS: <email address here>
-
- To get yourself off the list put the word "STOP" in front of the line in
- the body of the message.
-
- So if I wanted to subscribe I would send the following message
-
- To: michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov
- Subject: WEEKLY REPORT MAIL LIST
-
- ASCII TEXT: <michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov>
- NORCAL MAPS: <michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov>
- USA and WORLD MAPS: <michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov>
-
- Later if I decided to quit getting the NORCAL MAPS I would send a message
- with the same subject and the line
- STOP NORCAL MAPS: <michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov>
- in the body.
-
- Note: use an internet email address. People on other networks should include
- an internet gateway in their address. I don't have time to debug these,
- so if you don't see anything in a week or two let me know.
-
- These messages will be processed automatically so other info will be lost.
