  14. I'm on the receiving end of racism.  If I'm looking for work and the policy
  15. is not to hire black people, (Recently a New York City employment agency
  16. was proven to be systematically screening out black applicants)  OR I get
  17. to a job interview and latter discover that I've been turned down for a
  18. less qualified white applicant, the NET EFFECT IS THE SAME.  So, to me it
  19. there is no difference.

  21. I would like to raise the question of how "African Americans" are portrayed
  22. in the media?

  24. The original message cited examples of intentional lopsided coverage of how
  25. African Americans are portrayed in the media.  Again, I LIVE in Crown Heights
  26. Brooklyn, NY.  I happened to be in another city talking with someone who
  27. works at a TV station where the people who produce the news were told in
  28. no uncertain terms, not to air footage of Jews attacking African-Americans.
  29. The reverse images could be aired.

  31. Can we agree that it at least looks a little strange that in
  32. cartoons, most of the bad guys have brown skin?  Doesn't it look a little
  33. strange that on TV dramas, an inordinate number of criminals have brown skin?
  34. Doesn't it look a little strange that so many of the criminals on the
  35. nightly crime shows have brown skin?  Does not it seem equally strange that
  36. when we talk about teen pregancy and "entitlement" programs that more times
  37. than not the finger is being pointed at brown people?  Speak to these issues
  38. please.

  40. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must
  41. be a duck?  Or doesn't it at least strangely ressemble a duck?

  43. Injustice anywhere is a treat to justice everywhere.  It the public (media
  44. informed) debate around entitlement programs is framed in terms of
  45. African Americans being the major receivers, then our improverished white
  46. sisters and brothers (and don't kid yourself, there are lots of them
  47. and will be more as the economy continues to restructure itself) will suffer
  48. as well.

  50. By the way, what's the difference between bailing out the Savings and Loans and
  51. and entitlements?

  53. It appears to me as if the media conspires to distort the facts about
  54. the lives of people of color and many other issues.  The net effect is that
  55. we all suffer in one way or the other.

  57. I say that in no uncertain terms, the media conspires against African-Americans
  58. and that until we all recognize that, we will fail to see the larger
  59. threat that it poses to everyone.
