- THAI GENERAL FEARS ARMS FLOW FROM CAMBODIA
-
- BANGKOK, Jan 25, Reuter - The flow of cheap weapons from Cambodia into
- Thailand could disrupt life in the kingdom's eastern provinces, said Thailand's
- army chief.
- "Innocent people are...suffering from the influx of cheap weapons and
- ammunition across the border into Thailand," General Vimol Wongwanich told The
- Nation newspaper.
- "Unless we can halt this trade, domestic peace will certainly be affected,"
- he said in an interview published on Monday.
- Vimol, commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army, said he had reinforced
- Thailand's borders with Cambodia, where demobilisation of many fighters has led
- to the trade in arms and increased banditry.
- "The army has been forced to send more soldiers to keep the law along the
- border," he said. "Some of our men have been killed, either by stepping on
- mines or in fighting with the armed gangs."
- He said Thailand could not impose peace on Cambodia, where the Khmer Rouge
- have backed away from a U.N. peace plan saying their Vietnamese enemies are
- still active in the country.
- "I think it's probable that the only Vietnamese in Cambodia are those who
- have already retired (from the military) and work there," said the general, who
- recently visited Hanoi.
- He also said he supported the Thai government policy of "constructive
- engagement" with Burma's military rulers to bring about reform there.
- "No matter whether we oppose or agree with that country's political system,
- we will not intervene," he said.
- The dispute over the Spratly Islands -- a string of potentially oil-rich
- atolls in the South China Sea claimed by several Asian nations -- and
- overlapping exclusive economic zones claimed by Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and
- Cambodia had the potential to destabilise the region, he added.
