- Subject: Bangkok Post Jan 26: Govt to enforce helmet law on Feb 1
-
- INTERIOR Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh yesterday told ministerial
- officials that they must strictly enforce the law requiring
- motorcyclists to wear crash helmets starting on February 1.
-
- Ministerial sources said that Gen Chavalit, who gave motorcyclists
- a 45-day reprieve after protests from motorcycle taxis, told a
- meeting of ministry officials that they must enforce the law
- strictly when the reprieve ends on the first of next month.
-
- In other developments, Damri Rinwong, who led motorcycle protests
- late last year, said yesterday that motorcyclists would stage a
- peaceful rally at Sanam Luang on Sunday afternoon.
-
- He asked for the Interior Minister to facilitate the rally and to
- also come and meet the protesters who want the law revoked.
-
- Mr Damri said that accidents were not caused by not wearing crash
- helmets but by sub-standard roads and poor motorists.
-
- The speed for cars, the self-style activist said, should be
- reduced further to prevent accidents.
-
- He said that protesters will not carry any weapons on Sunday and
- the Interior Minister should not order the police to prevent the
- rally from being staged.
-
- Meanwhile, Gen Chavalit said yesterday that he has ordered the
- Local Administration Department to study and check assets and
- household tax payments in Chon Buri Province.
-
- Chon Buri governor Yuvarath Kamolvech recently claimed that many
- big companies in the province, including those under a former
- prime minister, have been evading taxes to the tune of thousands
- of million of baht.
-
- Gen Chavalit, according to sources, questioned why the claim has
- surfaced when it did, and why other provinces were not reporting
- such incidents too.
