  17. INTERIOR Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh yesterday told ministerial
  18. officials that they must strictly enforce the law requiring
  19. motorcyclists to wear crash helmets starting on February 1.
  20.  
  21. Ministerial sources said that Gen Chavalit, who gave motorcyclists
  22. a 45-day reprieve after protests from motorcycle taxis, told a
  23. meeting of ministry officials that they must enforce the law
  24. strictly when the reprieve ends on the first of next month.

  26. In other developments, Damri Rinwong, who led motorcycle protests
  27. late last year, said yesterday that motorcyclists would stage a
  28. peaceful rally at Sanam Luang on Sunday afternoon.

  30. He asked for the Interior Minister to facilitate the rally and to
  31. also come and meet the protesters who want the law revoked.

  33. Mr Damri said that accidents were not caused by not wearing crash
  34. helmets but by sub-standard roads and poor motorists.

  36. The speed for cars, the self-style activist said, should be
  37. reduced further to prevent accidents.

  39. He said that protesters will not carry any weapons on Sunday and
  40. the Interior Minister should not order the police to prevent the
  41. rally from being staged.

  43. Meanwhile, Gen Chavalit said yesterday that he has ordered the
  44. Local Administration Department to study and check assets and
  45. household tax payments in Chon Buri Province.

  47. Chon Buri governor Yuvarath Kamolvech recently claimed that many
  48. big companies in the province, including those under a former
  49. prime minister, have been evading taxes to the tune of thousands
  50. of million of baht.

  52. Gen Chavalit, according to sources, questioned why the claim has
  53. surfaced when it did, and why other provinces were not reporting
  54. such incidents too.
