  13. AN APPEAL TO HELP AND REHABILITATE THE BUDDHISTS
  14. AFFECTED BY COMMUNAL DISTURBANCES.

  17. As a consequence of destructions of historic Babri Mosque in
  18. Ayodhya, India, by the Hindu fundamentalists, communal
  19. disturbances flared up all over this subcontinent, resulting in
  20. colossal loss of human lives and properties.
  21.  
  22. On the 11th and 12th December 1992, a group of miscreants
  23. numbering 400/500 attacked the innocent Buddhist Monks and
  24. villagers at Matain under Senbagh Police Station in Noakhali
  25. District. They caused heavy damage to the only Buddhist temple,
  26. looted away the properties and broke into pieces statues of Lord
  27. Buddha. The miscreants injured the villagers, looted away the
  28. house-hold properties including cash, ornaments, paddy,
  29. furniture, cattle, and set on fire the dwelling houses, kitchen,
  30. and cowsheds of the villagers, and rendered them completely
  31. shelterless without having any food and clothings in this winter
  32. season. About 200 people of 30 houses have been passing their
  33. days in great miseries and the condition of the Children are more
  34. serious for want of proper food and medicine.

  36. Just after the occurrence, the "Young Men's Buddhist Association"
  37. "(YMBA), Comilla, Bangladesh with their limited resources rushed
  38. to the affected village and tried to succor the distress of the
  39. people by distributing food, clothes, medicine, cash, etc.

  41. The extent of damaged will be about Tk. 50,000,000 (fifty lac).
  42. So far, no substantial help has been received by them from the
  43. government or other donor agencies.

  45. Therefore, this appeal is made to all for immediate help to the
  46. affected villagers.
