- UNTAC CHIEF AKASHI SAYS ELECTION DOOR STILL OPEN ...
-
- JAKARTA (JAN. 18) DPA - Chief of the United Nations Transitionary Authority in
- Cambodia (UNTAC), Yasushi Akashi, said in Jakarta Monday that there were no
- plans to scrap the dialogue aimed at persuading the Khmer Rouge faction to take
- part in May general elections.
- "We have no plan to shut the door to the Khmer Rouge", Akashi told a press
- conference after a meeting with Indonesian President Suharto.
- He said UNTAC had no plan to delay the election but that some modalities
- still had to be studied by the U.N. Security Council.
- Akashi described efforts to restore peace and stability in Cambodia as the
- largest and most expensive of U.N. peacekeeping operations so far, with some
- 100 million U.S. dollars monthly being allocated to UNTAC operational costs.
- By the end of the 15-month mission the total cost would amount to 1.5 billion
- dollars.
- Akashi flew to Jakarta from Bangkok Sunday to discuss efforts by Indonesian
- foreign minister Ali Alatas who is expected to negotiate during talks with
- Cambodian leaders in Beijing, Bangkok and Phnom Penh starting Wednesday.
- Ali will meet Prince Norodom Sihanouk and Chinese government officials in
- Beijing and fly onto Bangkok to talk with Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan,
- Norodom Ranaridh of the Sihanoukist FUNCINPEC, Son Sann of the nationalist
- KPNLF and Thai foreign minister Prasong Soonsiri before talking in Phnom Penh
- with Hun Sen of the Vietnam-backed regime, Akashi and officials related to
- Cambodia peace process.
