- U.N. AUTHORITY SAYS CAMBODIANS SOON WILL BE ABLE ...
-
- PHNOM PENH (JAN. 18) DPA - Cambodians can apply as from Monday to have their
- passports endorsed by the Supreme National Council (SNC), the source of
- authority since the Paris Peace Accord was signed, and will soon be able to
- travel anywhere, a U.N spokesman said.
- "It's going to bring international recognition of Cambodian passports in
- general as you know they are currently accepted in very few countries,"
- spokesman Eric Falt said.
- "The international community is being informed about this initiative and
- requested to accord the same status to endorsed passports as they do with SNC
- passorts, which they already accept," he said.
- SNC passports have been previously available to members of the council and
- the royal family.
- The new measure was coordinated by the United Nations Transitional Authority
- in Cambodias (UNTAC) foreign affairs service together with the Supreme National
- Council secretariat, Falt said.
- "The Australian government has also provided assistance with the printing
- and with the training of Cambodian document examiners. The training will help
- to prevent the endorsement of falsified or forged passports," he added.
- In other news, 20 provisionally registered political parties have been able
- to register since January 13 and have until January 27 to do so or they cannot
- participate in the May elections.
- Each party must submit the names of all provincial candidates and a list of
- 5,000 registered voters who will support them.
- "The elections will be held on a provincial basis in accordance with a
- system of proportional representation," Falt said.
- "The final number of seats allocated for each province has not yet been
- determined."
- More than 4,540,000 Cambodians have registered to vote. The registration
- deadline is January 31, but may be extended to accommodate the refugees still
- in Thai border camps waiting to be repatriated he said.
