- 01/19 2136 THAILAND - BURMESE FEAR SABOTAGE, HALT CROSS-BORDER TRADE
-
- (JAN. 19) PAC RIM INTELLIGENCE REPORT - Mae Sot, TakLocal Burmese authorities
- in Myawaddy yesterday ordered the suspension of crossborder trade with this
- northern district for fear of acts of sabotage by anti- Rangoon elements.
- However, people of the two countries can still travel across the border as
- usual, according to a source that noted that Thai authorities in Mae Sot were
- informed of the action yesterday morning.
- Burma said it had learned that anti-Rangoon elements planned to conduct
- acts of sabotage in Myawaddy township from Thai soil.
- The Burmese authorities also asked their Thai counterparts to help take
- preventive measures, saying that they would not reopen the the border for
- cross-border trade until they feel the threat of sabotage has disappeared.
- A Burmese source said the Myawaddy authority spotted a group of at least
- five Burmese fugitive students of the All Burma Students Democratic Front on the
- Thai side of the border opposite Myawaddy.
- Meanwhile, sources said about 500 Burmese troops had been sent to reinforce
- checkpoints along the border and the road between Myawaddy and Pa-an as a
- security precaution while the National Convention was held in Rangoon.
- A Karen National Union source said the transport of goods was suspended
- because most of vehicles used for transporting goods in Myawaddy were being used
- to transport weapons and supplies in preparation for Burmese army attacks on
- KNU (Karen National Union) positions.
