- dear sas-lers:
- I have a data manipulation question. I have a variable, call it 'x' for
- several firms for 20 years. I am interested in finding out if 'x'
- increased consistently from one time period to the next (i.e., x
- at time 't' is greater than x at time 't-1' and so on). Note that
- 'x'can take negative values. I would like to be able to output the names
- of the firms, the number of firms for which 'x' increased every year during
- the 20 years in the data set. If 'x' increased only during 10 years in the
- 20 year-period, I would like to be able to output the name of such firms,
- the time period in the 20 year span during which 'x' increased consistently.
- Currently the data set is arranged such that 'year' is variable with 20
- observations one for each year. Similarly, 'x' is a variable with 20
- observations one for each year.
- I could try transposing the data set such that each of the x's becomes
- a variable. Since I have a large number of firms, I am not sure if this
- is efficient. Any suggestions will help. thanks.

- We use IBM 4381 and SAS version 5.18.
