  22. Jim Goes <goes@chimera.sph.umn.edu> asked if anyone had gotten a
  23. SAS HPGL driver to work successfully with the HP LJ IIIP.

  25. I haven't worked this issue recently but the following information
  26. may help Jim and my other SAS-L colleagues:

  28. 1.  The HP LJ IIIP cannot be set to HPGL via the front panel
  29.     operator codes.  The switch has to be made by software.
  30.  
  31. 2.  Call HP Tech Support at (206) 323-2551.  At the end of an
  32.     appropriate conversation, the friendly person at the other
  33.     end of the line will send you a disk containing a short
  34.     program that switches the HP LJ IIIP between HPGL and PCL5
  35.     for free.  The program is part of a demo disk for a
  36.     non-HP commercial software product.

  38. 3.  You can not cheat on memory in printerland.  If you want to
  39.     print a full page of HPGL graphics, you will need to invest
  40.     $$$ in a memory board for your HP IIIP to take it past 1 MB.

  42.     Pacific Data Products makes good boards.  If you are suffering
  43.     from the disease "Fundazlo" (funds are low), a 2 MB Elite brand
  44.     memory board, upgradable to 4 MB, is available from the Publisher's
  45.     Toolbox in Middletown, WI (800-233-3898) for the low side of $100.

  47. 4.  I vaguely remember something about having to set page protect
  48.     on your printer.  Ask the HP folks about this when you call.

  50. 5.  The HP LJ IIIP supports an emulation of HPGL called HPGL/2.
  51.     My recollection is that HPGL/2 is compatible with the HP 7470
  52.     HP 7475 drivers but not the HP 7550 drivers.  Nor does this
  53.     driver emulate multiple pens for obvious reasons.

  55. 6.  Don't have a HP III or HP IIIP driver but want to print in
  56.     HPGL?  Pacific Data Products makes a product called
  57.     "Plotter in a Cartridge" which brings this capability to
  58.     earlier model HP LaserJet printers.
  59.  
  60. Summary:  The HPGL drivers will print much faster but the
  61. appearance of graphics created by the PCL drivers is often
  62. better.
