  11. We have encountered a couple of calendar related problems with our
  12. installation of 5.1 that I would like to share with others...these
  13. might be common mistakes that would be nice to avoid!

  15. A couple of days ago I think I sent a note out about AICA abends we
  16. were receiving when trying to charge books to specific pseudo-patrons.
  17. After some investigation we determined that both of the affected
  18. patron categories had loan periods of 1 year. During my morning Diet
  19. Coke meditation it occurred to me that we entered calendars through
  20. the end of the 1993 calendar year...and since Cornell closes completely
  21. between Xmas and New Years, the last active calendar period for the
  22. libraries indicated CLOSED...so when the system tried to establish a
  23. year loan period it couldn't find an open day to make the book due on,
  24. thus the AICA abend. This was never a problem in our 4.6 system, because
  25. we listed all holidays as exception dates within periods. The 5.x
  26. system, with it's limited exception dates, forced us to create, for the
  27. first time, calendar periods that have no open days. Always be sure
  28. to follow such a period with one which indicates open hours!

  30. Also, in case anybody finds the CUTOFF time logic as confusing as I do,
  31. remember that if an minute/hourly loan item is due AFTER the cutoff time
  32. it will be made due the following day. It is easy for people to interpret
  33. this time as 'if the item is CHARGED after this time it is due the
  34. following day', and that is WRONG!!! Make sure you have that straight
  35. BEFORE entering the calendars!
