- Hi Leigh,
-
- Though Cornell is an MVS site, I wanted to respond to your note ...
-
- Point 7 isn't clear to me, and seems to contradict point 6. I gather
- the idea was that if the job ran properly, there would be no temporary
- datasets left around taking up space, and if the job ends abnormally,
- the temp datasets ARE left around to facilitate recovery. Yes? This
- is my notion of what's desirable.
-
- Point 8 suggests that we want the HLQ to change for temp datasets to
- accomodate multiple institution groups. I think a better suggestion
- would be to have temp dataset names have another node so the HLQ is
- consistent across jobs. That is, &HLQ..&ig..TEMP.jobname/jobstep.
- The idea is the same, but I think it could be implemented with less
- confusion.
-
- All your other suggestions that applied to MVS seemed good to me.
-
- How many MVS sites strongly want PROCs? If NOTIS wants to make VSE and
- MVS JCL more similar, maybe the solution lies in not using PROCs for
- either operating system. I don't know anything about VSE JCL, so I don't
- know how similar the two types of JCL can actually be.
-
- For the record, Cornell just went to release 5.1, and for the first time
- we left stuff in PROCs in the hopes of cutting down on our time
- massaging JCL when installing future releases. Obviously there are
- advantages and disadvantages to PROCs in MVS, but really what we're
- looking for is a way to get the new releases installed as smoothly as
- possible. PROCs make it easier to see what you've changed locally, but
- they're more difficult to troubleshoot at 4 in the morning. I'm sure
- more experienced Techies such as yourself and Michael know the pros
- and cons better than I. But ultimately, I think we ALL just want to
- cut down on the time we spend messing with JCL when installing a new
- release.
- I'm glad this topic is being discussed. If I can be of any help, etc.
- please don't hesitate to contact me.

- PS Thanks for your help the other day with the fiscal year stuff. Since
- we could actually approve invoices just fine, we aren't going to bother
- changing the fiscal years, and we'll be doing some testing of our local
- fiscal year rollover program here to see if there are any adverse affects
- then.
