- NeXT Profitable in Q4 '92
- North American Sales Up 36% in 1992
-
- REDWOOD CITY, Calif., January 21, 1993 - NeXT Computer, Inc. today
- announced its first quarterly operating profit, for the fourth
- quarter of 1992, on revenues of $45 million. NeXT also announced
- worldwide revenues of $140 million for the year ended December 31,
- 1992, an increase of 10 percent over the prior year's $127 million.
- Highlighted were North American revenues, which increased 36 percent
- year to year, from $72 million to $98 million.
-
- "NeXT had a solid 1992, with a growth rate more than double that of
- the total workstation market, which grew 4.2 percent, according to
- Dataquest," said Peter van Cuylenburg, NeXT's president and chief
- operating officer. "We achieved profitability in Q4 on the basis of
- increased revenues, higher gross margins and reduced expenses."
-
-
- Steven P. Jobs, NeXT's chairman and CEO, commented: "We added to our
- base of large customers in 1992, which now includes Chrysler
- Financial, McCaw Cellular, WilTel, Bozell (BJK&E), Mount Clemens
- Hospital, First National Bank of Chicago and Swiss Bank Corporation.
- One of these customers is already using NeXTSTEP on more than 1,000
- desktops, and several others are planning multi-thousand desktop
- deployments during the next 12 to 24 months."
-
- One of NeXT's most recent new customer wins is AIG Trading
- Corporation, a currency and commodities trading company that is
- designing its new trading floor completely around the object-oriented
- NeXTSTEPd environment.
-
- "Fast, reliable and cutting-edge communications and information
- technology are critical to our success," said Tom Borgeson, director
- of technology for AIG Trading Corporation. "We are sold on the
- object-oriented approach to developing and using software, and
- NeXTSTEP is the leader in integrating that approach onto a UNIX
- platform. We're very excited about using our NeXT systems to develop
- applications in-house and to integrate voice and text communications,
- especially using NeXTmail."
-
- About NeXT
- NeXT Computer, Inc. designs and markets the industry-acclaimed
- NeXTSTEP object-oriented system software environment. NeXTSTEP is
- used by medium and large organizations to develop and deploy
- mission-critical applications, using both custom and shrink-wrapped
- software. NeXT is headquartered at 900 Chesapeake Drive, Redwood
- City, Calif., 94063.

- SECOND ANNUAL NeXTWORLD EXPO SLATED FOR MAY 1993
- 10,000 Attendees Expected at San Francisco Event
-
-
- SAN FRANCISCO, January, 1993 - Digital Consulting, Inc. (DCI),
- NeXTWORLD Magazine and NeXT Computer, Inc. today announced that
- NeXTWORLD Expo '93 the second international conference devoted to
- the NeXTSTEP platform will be held at the Moscone Convention Center
- in San Francisco May 25 through 27, 1993. More than 10,000 people
- from commercial, government and educational organizations are
- expected to attend the event, which combines a Developer's
- Conference, User Conference and product showcase.
-
- Last year's Expo drew more than 7,000 people. Attendance at
- NeXTWORLD Expo '93 promises to exceed that number, in part by
- attracting PC users interested in NeXTSTEP 486, the industry's first
- object-oriented system software to run on industry-standard Intel
- hardware.
-
- Jobs will kick off NeXTWORLD Expo '93 with a keynote presentation.
-
-
-
- Event Appeals to All Members of the NeXTSTEP Community
-
- NeXTWORLD Expo '93 combines three events into one:
-
- - A worldwide Developer's Conference. The three-day
- conference, sponsored by NeXT, will provide developers with
- information on future object-oriented software technology and market
- direction.
-
- - Product Showcase. The end-user product showcase, which will last
- for two-and-one-half days, will feature NeXTSTEP-related hardware and
- software products from more than 100 exhibitors.
-
- - User Conference. Also lasting two-and-one-half days, the User
- Conference will feature a program of prominent speakers who will
- cover a variety of topics, ranging from object-oriented client/server
- systems to enterprise-wide deployment.
-
- In addition, NeXT Organizations InteRnational (NOIR) is sponsoring an
- international user group program on May 27 as part of NeXTWORLD Expo.
- More than 200 worldwide NeXT user groups will be represented and will
- participate in various user group events during the course of the
- Expo.
-
- NeXTWORLD Expo will also dedicate space to the growing number of
- ObjectWared vendors developers offering this component-based
- software for incorporating real-world functionality into any kind of
- application. An ObjectWare Pavilion will be situated on the
- exhibition floor throughout the Expo.
-
- ObjectWare, made possible by NeXTSTEP's object-oriented architecture,
- sits between traditional system software and traditional application
- software. It consists of objects that can be bought and licensed by
- developers to create custom applications much faster. Hundreds of
- developers have created commercially available or public-domain
- ObjectWare objects, some of which are included in a NeXT catalog
- titled NeXT ObjectWare. These third-party ObjectWare objects, like
- all the objects included in the mature library of foundation objects
- provided in NeXTSTEP, are fully conformant with the Object Management
- Group (OMG)'s industry-standard object model.
-
- "ObjectWare began with NeXTSTEP, the first fully object-oriented
- system software to be available in the market, and has blossomed into
- a healthy sub-industry for software development," said Jobs. "By
- devoting Expo space to ObjectWare, we are both recognizing the
- importance of the phenomenon and helping to foster it worldwide."
-
-
