  21.    TREK-REVIEW-L exists as a noise-free forum for reviews of Star Trek
  22.    material. This category includes but is not limited to television
  23.    programs, feature films, novels and novelizations, comic books, games
  24.    and parodies of Star Trek.

  26.    THE list is not rooted in any specific generation of Trek.  Original
  27.    Series, Animated Series, Movie Era, Next Generation and Deep Space
  28.    Nine materials are all valid.

  30.    ONE way to perceive this list is as a kind of edited electronic
  31.    fanzine.  Where 'rec.arts.startrek.info' is a kind of Trek newspaper,
  32.    containing only hard news and plot summaries, this mailing list exists
  33.    for CRITICAL opinion features written by and for the electronic mail
  34.    audience.

  36.    IF a 'rec.arts.startrek.reviews' newsgroup is created in the future,
  37.    this list will gateway into it.

  39.    THERE are three categories of acceptable submission: review, rating,
  40.    and comment.

  42.    'REVIEW' is defined as a CRITICAL essay about either a specific work
  43.    or Star Trek in general.  Posts of the form, 'I thought that TNG's
  44.    latest episode, "Foo on Picard" was the awesomest episode ever' or,
  45.    similarly, 'I thought that DSN's latest episode, "O'Brien Gets Drunk"
  46.    sucked backwards' are not acceptable.

  48.    'RATING' is defined as a graded or numeric rating. If you wish to
  49.    merely register your opinion without critical comment, then you may
  50.    send such a rating to the list address. Ratings collected in this
  51.    manner, as well as copied from reviews, will be posted periodically on
  52.    a per-episode basis.

  54.    'COMMENT' is defined as a CRITICAL response to a review. This is not a
  55.    discussion list; however, CRITICAL responses to reviews sent to the
  56.    list address which the moderator believes to be of general interest
  57.    will be bundled together and published in digest format as a 'letter
  58.    column'.

  60.    SUBMISSIONS should be sent to 'TREK-REVIEW-L@cornell.edu'.  Accepted
  61.    submissions are acknowledged by publication. Rejected submissions will
  62.    be acknowledged by a return letter, explaining why the submission was
  63.    rejected.

  65.    What the list isn't for

  68.    The list is not a discussion list. Neither, however, is it intended to
  69.    displace 'rec.arts.startrek.current' as another home for reviews.
  70.    Rather, it is intended as an alternative access point to critical
  71.    opinion about Star Trek for people who find
  72.    'rec.arts.startrek.current' overwhelming or cannot access it for some
  73.    reason. It is expected that many of the reviews posted to the list
  74.    will also find their way (assumedly at their author's hands) onto
  75.    'r.a.s.current'. That, therefore, is where discussion should take place.

  77.    The list is not for press releases or plot summaries without
  78.    commentary. That's why we have 'rec.arts.startrek.info' (thank you,
  79.    Jim!)

  81.    The list is not for the redistribution of commercially published
  82.    reviews, with or without permission. It is for the posting of comments
  83.    for and by members of the various electronic networks that make up or
  84.    exchange mail with The Internet.

  86.    The list is not intended as a replacement for proposals to create a
  87.    'rec.arts.startrek.reviews' newsgroup. Rather, it exists to fill the gap
  88.    some feel such a group would also fill until efforts to create such a
  89.    newsgroup are successful. Neither, however, will that newsgroup
  90.    necessarily mean the end of this list.

  121.    About the Cornell Listserv

  124.    The Cornell Listserv is based on Tasos Kotsikonas' Unix Listserver.
  125.    Many commands are similar to those found on BITNET's Revised Listserv
  126.    (by Eric Thomas(?)), but many are different. PLEASE use the HELP
  127.    system to get information about any command you are unsure about.

  129.    The Cornell Listserv expects to receive only commands in the body of a
  130.    message. Many mail user programs (foolishly) reproduce what should be
  131.    header information in the body of a message, confusing Listserv.
  132.  
  133.    In particular, QuickMail users should use a BLANK QM form when
  134.    interacting with Listserv -- that is, a form with NO text
  135.    pre-inscribed on it -- just a text box for the user to type in.

  143.    This list is something of an experiment. I've been toying with the
  144.    idea of an on-line fanzine of this sort for many years, and this
  145.    seemed like the Right Time. Furthermore, if it can help to establish
  146.    whether or not USENET needs another Star Trek newsgroup, it will have
  147.    served a useful purpose. It may turn out that a mailing list is
  148.    enough; it may show that there is so much interest in an reviews-only
  149.    group that a newsgroup would be beneficial; or it may show that
  150.    interest is small enough that even a mailing list is too much effort.
  151.    Only time will tell. In the mean time, I hope that those interested
  152.    will join the list, either to read, or to participate.
