- George, the Ribbon Ceremony celebrates graduation from the gymnasium,
- but it takes place around Christmastime because after the holidays,
- fourth-year students become tremendously busy preparing for their
- graduation exams (the term used was school-leaving tests) and entrance
- exams for the university. The fourth year is the most important for
- gymnasium students because this is when they put their knowledge
- gathered over the previous four years together toward entering the
- University studying toward the career of their choice.
-
- The Ribbon Ceremony is a symbol that the student has made it through
- the first three and a half years of gymnasium and is preparing to take
- the final step toward deciding his future career, either in the Univer-
- sity or in another pursuit. I identify this ceremony as a coming of
- age.
-
- By the way, the students wear their ribbons (they were green at the two
- gymnasia I visited in East Slovakia) on their lapels or jackets for the
- remainder of the academic year.
-
- Anybody else want to explain further.
