- Lines: 73
-
- We are running RiceMail on a VM/ESA mainframe, and (until recently)
- were a BITNET-only site. We have recently gone on the Internet. I
- have been charged with the responsibility of getting RiceMail to
- send to Internet sites (we are using SMTP for Internet). I have
- run into problems.
-
- To send mail on Internet, I put the following in my MAILSYS XEDIT file :
-
- /**/
- 'SETMAIL DIRECT NO'
- 'SETMAIL MAILER SMTP'
- 'SETMAIL KEY.LINES 2'
-
- With this setting, I can send to Internet addresses (for example,
- axvsccn@uicvmc.aiss.uiuc.edu), but not to BITNET addresses (for
- example, JACK@FANDM). A file sent to a BITNET address results
- in the following 'bounced mail' :
- ================================================================================
- Date: Wed, 20 Jan 93 11:17:55 ET
- From: <SMTP@MU2.MILLERSV.EDU>
- To: <BWALTON@MILLERSV>
- Subject: Undeliverable Mail
-
- MU2.MILLERSV.EDU unable to deliver following mail to recipient(s):
- <jack@fandm>
- 550 Host 'fandm' Unknown
-
- ** Text of Mail follows **
- Received: from MILLERSV by MU2.MILLERSV.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R2)
- with BSMTP id 1490; Wed, 20 Jan 93 11:17:54 ET

- this should be '.bitnet'
- instead of OUR Internet address
- (rest of message deleted)
-
- Now, if I keep the MAILSYS XEDIT file the way it was when we were
- a BITNET-only site:
-
- /**/
- 'SETMAIL DIRECT YES'
- 'SETMAIL KEY.LINES 2'
-
- Then I have the opposite problem - mail via BITNET works fine, but
- mail sent to an Internet address results in the following message:
-
- **** Logging started for virtual screen MESSAGE on 01/04/93 at 15:40:40
- DMTAXM103E File 3753 (3753) rejected -- invalid destination address
-
- Is there any easy way out of this ? Ideally, a user should be able
- to specify a BITNET address (e.g. MAIL JACK@FANDM or even
- MAIL JACK@FANDM.BITNET) *or* an Internet address (e.g.
- MAIL axvsccn@uicvmc.aiss.uiuc.edu) without having to change
- their MAILSYS XEDIT file every time they want to send a mail
- file. I could not find anything in the MAILBOOK LISTING file
- about this. Where is SETMAIL documented ?
-
-
- P.S. If I create a mail file (in XEDIT, for example) and save it,
- I can send it via Internet with the SENDFILE command (e.g.
- SF BWALTON MAIL A to sflatt@austria.gislab.teale.ca.gov)
- Also, CMS NOTE seems to work for both BITNET and Internet -
- but, alas, not RiceMail.
-
- Thanks in advance.
