- well, thank you so much, michael.
-
- the author of _the secret history_ is donna tartt. and, for those for
- which the tactile aspects of reading are important, let me add that it
- is a simply gorgeous book. not in the griffin & sabine manner, just
- a beautiful cover and yummy paper and good choice of font.
-
- i'm in the middle of the _satanic verses_ right now and - wow! i'm
- in seventh heaven! the way this guy writes-he makes words dance. reading
- him is like reading etymologies - where you have to track the changes in
- sense in half steps, from one meaning to another just half a step over,
- which then takes on the character of a nearby more overwhelming meaning.
-
- my difficulty at the moment is that i am only a little better than
- woefully idnorint of the religious and mythic background he's playing
- with. i can see just enough to mostly get it, and know i'm missing
- something. can anyone suggest some sources i could quickly read? short
- ones, because i don't want to delay too much my reading of SV. i don't
- want to start looking at criticism of SV until i've finished reading it
- myself, so that's not an avenue.
-
- thanks -
