- It's true that Mona Van Duyn, not Maya Angelou, is the current "Poetry
- Advisor to the Librarr of Congress." For several years now, since, I
- think, James Dickey held the post, that office has also been termed "poet
- laureate." But for a long time there was resistance to the idea of a poet
- laureate in the U.S., and a scruple to keep the Library of Congress post
- from appearing as such, presumably to avoid emulation with the "courtly
- muses" etc. Ms. Van Duyn's interesting poem was featured on NPR a few
- nights ago, and her new book is well worth reading.
