- Here is the requested summary of responses to my request for answering
- machine experiences, pro and con. I received 24 replies, most from
- large universities (3 from special libraries; 3 from college libraries).

- Almost everyone strongly favors the use of answering machines/voice mail
- in reference departments at busy times. 7 libraries said they used and
- recommended a machine that only gives library hours and/or a message like
- "All librarians are busy now; please call back in a few minutes." The only
- problem reported with this system is that some patrons thought they were
- leaving messages, even though there was no tone or anything to indicate
- that they should

- 14 libraries use and recommend answering machines or voice mail (Audix
- mentioned) that permit the patron to leave a message about the nature
- of their question. Problems mentioned: staff forget to check the mes-
- sages, staff doesn't like the impersonality, security (machines were
- stolen--twice!). Patrons seem to like them. Suggestions: Have clear
- guidelines about who is responsible for checking messages, etc.; Have
- different messages and be sure you have the right one in; mention on
- the message if you have limitations on returning calls (e.g. can't
- return long distance calls).

- that just adds to the problem of interrupting service to patrons
- who are in the library.
