  48.                 Statement of Vice President Al Gore
  49.  
  50.       Today, we are sending a clear message to the special interests
  51.  who used the Council on Competitiveness as a back-door to avoid the
  52.  law. That back door is closed. No longer will special interests
  53.  receive special favors. No longer will our laws be ignored or
  54.  undermined. No longer will decisions that should be made in public be
  55.  made in private. In this Administration everyone will play by the
  56.  rules and public decisions will be public information.
  57.  
  58.       The Council on Competitiveness was founded on a false choice;
  59.  that the interests of workers, consumers, and the environment
  60.  conflict with the goal of economic growth. And, rather than
  61.  reconciling those objectives in public, the past Administration used
  62.  the Council on Competitiveness as an excuse for special favors for
  63.  narrow interests and back-room decisions. We are committing ourselves
  64.  to a process that will serve the American people honestly, openly,
  65.  and with respect for the law and their safety.

  67.       President Clinton and I today reaffirm our strong support for
  68.  policies that recognize we must ensure environmental protection to
  69.  have strong economic growth.
