- This reply is for Larry Anderson and others in reference to my comments
- about technolgoy and education. I am not going to put myself into
- the position of having to justify my beliefs through quantitative data
- and research. We definitely have very different philosophies about
- teaching, education, and technology. If you wish, you can always read
- Larry Cuban's book on Teachers and Machines. That's a good place to
- start. However, the real issue I was addressing is being lost in
- Anderson's attempts to negate my position. And that is that not every
- problem in education and society requires a committee of experts, ideas
- generated through informal discussions an in teachers lounges are very
- reasonable to me. This is not to say that committees are not useful.
- I attend and take part in many. But, there is no universal rule set out
- in stone that says that educators are not allowed to use their owm thoughts
- and experiences to argue why they will not go along with every idea
- proposed by someone who walks into the school or classroom. Teaching is
- not universally good, there are poor teachers, but there are also plenty
- of poor technology planners. To assume that you, your group, or any
- other technology division who is not in a classroom eight hours a day
- can fully depict, describe, or address the problems educators face is
- crazy. It's insane what we make schools and teachers do under the
- guise of "restructuring" and "improvement" and "excellence." Think
- about it. Does anyone walk into YOUR office and tell you what you
- are going to do for an ENTIRE YEAR?! No other profession, apart from
- Nursing, lives their professional lives this way. If you want to carry on
- in this fashion, too bad. What I was saying is that I don't have all
- the answers, even armed with MOUNTAINS of data, reports, "facts" to
- make changes in education without teachers input and that includes their
- resistance. I respect teachers experiences, ideas, and resistance.
- Resistance is critical to the affirmation of ones identity and lifeworld.
- Only a person, or persons, with a warped sense of power or need for
- authority (bordering on fascism) would think that they are right and
- the teacher/educator working day to day in the real setting is wrong.
- Again, we have different philosophies about education and teaching.
- I am holding onto mine, and the people I work with appreciate my efforts
- to include them, to understand how they feel, and to respect their
- ideas. P.K. Jamison
