- Our Education Dept. at Juniata College (a liberal arts college in central
- PA) is in the process of investigating the feasibility of offering a
- dual certification program in regular ed/special ed (we currently offer
- certification programs in Early Childhood, El Ed, and Secondary Ed).
- However, we've had to put our study on hold, as there is a powerful
- new push at the state Dept Ed to eliminate special ed certification
- altogether, and to institute a single certification program that would
- prepare all teachers to be skilled in dealing with all "types" of
- students (including those with "exceptionalities"). This would be
- accomplished at the undergraduate level, as is our current regular
- ed certification program, although one or two areas of "endorsement"
- at the graduate level are being considered (e.g., in visual impairment
- and hearing impairment). This plan appears to be in direct support of
- the Regular Education Initiative and the total inclusion movements
- of the past several years.
-
- I recommend that you contact the Sp. Ed. Dept. of LaSalle U. in Philadelphia.
- They have an established dual certification program in elem. ed/special ed.,
- and I'm sure they would be willing to discuss their program with you. The
- phone there is (215) 951-1000. Best of luck!
