  16. Perhaps what is awry in so many classrooms is that so few teachers do read
  17. anything, particularly anything of the sort Ben posts.  Not in the putative
  18. discipline, right?  The point is not really a core list, but any (and many) of
  19. the thousands of such works, wherever the path leads one.  For too many
  20. people--students and teachers alike, alas--the path is a dead end.  The "rigor"
  21. and "discipline" of a canon can suffice only as a beginning; but any canon
  22. must be mutable and its virtue may lie principally in its deconstruction, as
  23. our postmodern friends are likely to remind us.
