- Richard's comment illuminates the evident confusion about public and private
- schools. These schools are ALL public in the sense that (a) most receive
- public funds, (b) most "private" schools are nonprofits legally acknowledged
- to act in the "public" interest, and (c) even impoverished folks with the
- temerity to inquire about scholarships have the "choice" of attending them.
- The only truly private schools are in the province of homeschoolers. The
- dilemma with us is that most of the enterprises we call "public" actually--
- as Kozol and Illich and other "unpleasant" customers remind us (with such
- temerity)--serve private interests. Economic justice--not just in schooling,
- but in housing, employment, and health--lies at the core of the issues dis-
- cussed here. Bellah and colleagues (Habits of the Heart) point out that most
- of us lack even the language to discuss these matters of public interest.
