- The noise *is* the carrier signal. Remember, the TDD was developed before
- the ASCII modem...also, most TTD's have acoustic couplers (which usually
- aren't a smug fit), so the signal have to be loud enugh so the receiving
- TDD can seperate it from the background noise.

- By the way, an interesting sidenote: I found another use for my TDD: I use
- it to communicate with hearing people because it's less likely to bring on
- a writer's cramp as writing notes would. However, because of the noise,
- Dad rigged a new switch in my TDD to turn the speaker off.
