  15. A number of months ago I tried to show (though "showing"
  16. something involves 2-part harmony) that control systems of a
  17. given order (e.g. cells) are necessarily oblivious to the means
  18. by which they implement ECSs and their perceptual signals,
  19. hierarchies of perceptual control, etc. in control systems of the
  20. next higher order (e.g. animals and plants).  The same principle
  21. applies to the Gaia hypothesis.  The means and terms of feedback
  22. are obscured for us, through evolutionary selection, because if
  23. they became more evident to us as perceptions they might become
  24. controlled perceptions, which would ruin us as constituents of
  25. the (postulated) higher-order control systems.  Disclosing what
  26. is going on behind this veil must be undertaken very carefully.
  27. The bicycle might fall over (our participation in effecting
  28. perceptual control in a control system of order Gaia, as
  29. byproducts of our individual control in face of ecologically
  30. coordinated environmental disturbances).  If humans be analogous
  31. to cortical brain cells, the analog of epilepsy might ensue for
  32. gaia.  Indeed, we may be in the fringes of that now.

  35. the plausibility of the hypothesis.
