- ACPA Commission IX
- Third Annual Preconference Research Forum
-
-
- January 1993
-
- Dear Colleague:
-
- Do you attend ACPA to become rejuvenated? Are you looking for
- good research in student affairs and ACPA? Do you produce good
- research and evaluation reports but have difficulty finding an
- audience for them? Do you need better research and evaluation
- studies to improve your decision-making within student affairs? If
- you answered "yes" to any or all of the items on this standardized
- instrument with perfect reliability and validity, consider coming
- to ACPA a day early to discuss and promote student affairs research
- with your colleagues.
-
- ACPA Commission IX (Assessment for Student Development) would
- like to invite you to apply to participate in the Third Annual
- Preconference Research Forum, Student Affairs Research:
- Expectations, Models, and Methods. The Forum is scheduled for
- Saturday, March 27, 1993 from 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. in Kansas
- City. Among our goals for the Forum are (a) promoting quality
- research, evaluation, and assessment activities among the
- membership of ACPA; and (b) working toward translating the
- knowledge of experts in the areas of research, evaluation, and
- assessment to campus decision-makers.
-
- Dr. Robert D. Brown; former editor of the Journal of College
- Student Development, former President of ACPA, and tireless
- advocate of research in student affairs has agreed to "energize"
- us. After being challenged by Bob we have planned three panel
- discussions, one each for Expectations, Models, and Methods.
- Please see the attached schedule to meet the panelists.
-
- Expectations sets the tone for the Forum by offering a
- variety of opinions on the need for student affairs
- research, as well as its characteristics, value, role,
- and use. The CAS Standards and Guidelines for Student
- Services/Development Programs (1986) indicated that a
- student affairs research effort is necessary yet A Study
- of Student Affairs Research and Evaluation Activities in
- American Colleges and Universities (1989) revealed only
- a moderate amount of student affairs research. Is
- student affairs research necessary? Does student affairs
- research contribute to management information? Why/why
- not? What would encourage administrators to establish a
- student affairs research effort and use the results of
- that effort? What is expected of a good student affairs
- research effort?
-
- Models offers opinions about settings in which student
- affairs research is done and by whom. Should there be a
- student affairs research and evaluation office (SAREO)?
- If not, should student affairs research be a staff
- function in the chief student affairs administrator's
- (CSSA) office, or in the institutional research (IR)
- office, or do we count on faculty and graduate students
- to do our research? Which is the preferred arrangement?
- Has assessment rekindled our interest in research or has
- it deferred attention from the student affairs research
- effort?
-
- Methods offers a discussion of more specific techniques
- for meeting campus research expectations. As a part of
- the methods discussion, the quantitative-qualitative
- debate from the 1991 Forum will be considered.
- Additional questions may include, who is doing what kinds
- of research? Survey research? Experimental
- investigations? Telephone surveys? Focus groups?
-
- As has been our practice in the past, we have selected some
- reading material as preparation for the Forum. This year we chose
- Promises and Pieces in Wonderland: The Promise and Practice of
- Student Affairs Research, a recent NASPA book edited by Karl J.
- Beeler and Deborah E. Hunter. If you do not have a copy, a form is
- enclosed for you to use to purchase copies directly from NASPA.
-
- As you will note from the enclosed schedule, the Expectations
- Panel discussion extends through lunch which we hope to arrange in
- the conference hotel hopefully for a cost of less than $20 to you.
- We also plan to arrange for a social with a cash bar immediately
- following the Forum in one of the conference hotel lounges for
- continued discussion with your colleagues. There is no charge for
- your participation in the Forum, however.
-
- If you are interested and able to participate in the Forum,
- please complete and return the enclosed application by
- February 19, 1993. As we are trying to maximize everyone's
- opportunities to participate in the discussions, we will be
- limiting attendance to 30 participants. Should it become necessary
- to screen applicants, please take a few minutes to think about your
- participation in the Forum and answer the brief questions on the
- application.
-
- Please feel free to contact me with further questions at (804)
- 683-3080 or by BITNET at JWP100U @ ODUVM.
-
- Sincerely,
-
- James W. Pickering, Ed. D.
