  17. Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe, and John Hiatt.

  19. I can't let a reference to songwriters go by without mentioning the late great
  20. Sammy Cahn, lyricist supreme, who passed away just a week ago. Cole Porter and
  21. Ira Gershwin may have turned more elegant phrases, but nobody matched Sammy
  22. Chan for versatility and volume. My favorite Sammy Cahn anecdote is one that
  23. he tells like this:

  25. "A fellow came in one day and said, 'Say, can you guys write me a song called
  26. "Three Coins In the Fountain"?'"

  31. My personal all-time favorite songwriter would be Allen Toussaint, who has
  32. covered a lot of ground himself.
