- Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, Holland/Dozier/Holland, Lennon and
- McCartney, Robbie Robertson, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, Elvis Costello,
- Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe, and John Hiatt.

- I can't let a reference to songwriters go by without mentioning the late great
- Sammy Cahn, lyricist supreme, who passed away just a week ago. Cole Porter and
- Ira Gershwin may have turned more elegant phrases, but nobody matched Sammy
- Chan for versatility and volume. My favorite Sammy Cahn anecdote is one that
- he tells like this:
-
- "A fellow came in one day and said, 'Say, can you guys write me a song called
- "Three Coins In the Fountain"?'"
-
- "I said, 'We can write you a song called "Eh".'"
-
-
- My personal all-time favorite songwriter would be Allen Toussaint, who has
- covered a lot of ground himself.
