  16. the the is the creative talents of one matt johnson, british wacko and
  17. popster. the the has have, um, four releases now (i think - might be one
  18. more). the first is relatively hard to come by, but arguably the most
  19. interesting (and i can't recall the title). the next two are good, en-
  20. titled _dusk_ and _soul mining_, the later which contains one of my
  21. favorite pop gems of all time: "uncertain smile." at about this time,
  22. the the started getting some colelge radio airplay and consequently,
  23. the next album, _infected_ was a cmj smash. despite the hype, it's a
  24. fairly good release as well, with the title track being very popular on
  25. the college airwaves around 1988 or so. the next album was called _mind-
  26. bomb_ and also did well in that realm. this was a bit more subdued than
  27. the more dancyish _infected_ and has some great cynical and acidic
  28. moments. johnny marr, freshly divorced of the smiths at the time,
  29. played guitar on this album.

  31. that's about when i stopped listening to the band. i believe they have
  32. a new album coming out soon, though i don't really know for sure.

  34. matt's also got one pre-the the release on 4ad records which is supposed
  35. to be re-issued sometime soon as well (this would be what i refered to
  36. above as the first the the releae - i just remembered that it was solo).

  38. i'd go for _soul mining_ and _mindbomb_ myself, but if you want a more
  39. in-your-face type of album, pick up _infected_. cbs records carries all
  40. these (except the 4ad one) so they should be easy to find. relatively.
