- This is old news, but listening to some Mahavishnu Orchestra and Tony
- Williams recordings made me remember something that came up in the rock vs.
- jazz players discussion that Michael and JeffB were engaged in. I didn't
- save the posts in question, so I will have to paraphrase. In discussing
- what rock artists could be called on for jazz sessions, Jeff mentioned
- Billy Cobham. Michael responded that Cobham never was a rock drummer.
-
- In order to get some perspective, I'd have to ask if Michael considers
- Tony Williams in the same light. I tend to think of both of these guys as
- drummers who can play either rock or jazz. I think back to Cobham with the
- Mahavishnu Orchestra (listen to "The Noonward Race" from _The Inner
- Mounting Flame_ if you doubt this), Dreams, and also that short-lived
- excursion with Bobby and the Midnites, and Williams work with the various
- incarnations of Lifetime as evidence of their ability in the rock genre.
- Of course, they play a lot of stuff in 23/16 time, so that alone may
- disqualify them in some people's minds. ;*)
-
- Of course, I also disagree with Da Beer saying that Bill Bruford
- couldn't play jazz, so what do I know? :*)
-
- Anyhow, where do you draw the line between a jazz and a rock drummer,
- and why can't someone be both? (I've got my own thoughts on the matter,
- but first I'll try to get some cheap votes for "Allmusic Threadmaker" for
- 1993. ;*)
-
-
- Today Michael said:
-
- >I am extremely incensed at the dog-in-the-manger attitude of major labels who
- >hold copyrights of important, in-demand records and won't make them available.
- >Can you say _It's a Beautiful Day_? Thought you could.
-
- I'm curious about this one Michael. This discussion came up before, but
- I found this CD priced as high as what you would expect to pay for any
- imports (~$25). It was released by an outfit called (*synapse failure*)
- San Francisco Sound (? -- they also have done some Moby Grape releases for
- a slightly more reasonable price). I think John Mc mentioned finding it as
- an import. So what's the scoop on this? If CBS is sitting on this one (it
- was originally on Columbia wasn't it?) then are these "grey market" CD's?
