  12. I am having problems with telnet under AIX 3.2 on an RS/6000. It
  13. consistently fails for certain host systems. For example, if I telnet
  14. to a Cisco reverse terminal server connected to an IBM 7171 and press
  15. the carriage return key I get the following characters on the screen:

  19. instead of the expected 'Enter terminal type'. I have run most of my
  20. tests from an aixterm window on an Xstation 130. Attempts to telnet
  21. to a Cisco reverse terminal server fail in the same way as shown above
  22. under AIX 3.2, from an aixterm window on the system console, and from
  23. the system console with no windowing system. Sun OS and Next systems
  24. can telnet to the same Cisco reverse terminal server successfully.

  26. We have IBM TCP/IP installed on an MVS system. We have also installed
  27. SimTCP/IP, an add-on product that allows the MVS system to accept
  28. VT-100 telnet sessions (as opposed to tn3270 sessions) and perform
  29. VT-100 to 3270 protocol conversion on the MVS system. I have no
  30. problem with tn3270 sessions. If I telnet to MVS as a VT-100 I get the
  31. following on the screen:

  38. On the real screen the period and the upper-case 'F' are in column
  39. eighty. I have moved them in a bit to avoid line folding problems. This
  40. display includes pieces of text from the expected output, but is clearly
  41. corrupted. Staff members in another department have reported that they
  42. can telnet to the MVS system as VT-100s successfully. They are using
  43. Macintoshes and IBM PCs. I don't know which vendor they bought their
  44. TCP/IP hardware and software from.

  46. The RS/6000 telnet does seem to work correctly with Annex reverse
  47. terminal servers.

  49. Does anyone recognize this problem, or have any good suggestions for
  50. determining the source of the problem? I am discussing this with IBM,
  51. but they are currently giving me the run-around.
