- I sincerely hope you're joking on both points. How can waiting at
- a cross street of a busy road, unable to trip the signal, possibly
- be "better for the bicyclist"? Or better yet, getting halfway
- across before being broadsided by someone who wasn't expecting you
- (since it's green in their direction)? Not every cyclist has the
- acceleration or top speed to dart across a 4+ lane road between
- cross traffic.
-
- And while traffic laws are (currently) rarely enforced against
- cyclists, you can bet this cyclist would like to see wrong-way
- riders and red-light runners (except in the can't-trip-the-signal
- case) cited. And "fix-it" tickets given to "stealth bikes" at
- night. In Palo Alto the Bicycle Advisory Committee is working with
- the police department to give them handout materials to give to
- inexperienced cyclists they see doing unsafe maneuvers. It's
- a start.
-
- Gee -- let's stop enforcing the laws for motorists too! It'd save
- lots of money, I'm sure, and the carnage would mean fewer cars on
- the road as time goes on... certainly better for the bicyclist ;-)
