  11. I just made a WONDERFUL discovery in downtown Oakland, so I thought I'd
  12. share it, and a couple of my other downtown faves, in the interests of
  13. bolstering the perennially around-the-corner rejuvenation of the area.
  14. Motss relevance will be noted where it exists.  Yes, there is a there
  15. there!  (Motss relevance -- Gertrude Stein)

  17.     The Oakland Museum, 10th at Oak.  I always avoided this place,
  18.     expecting a few dull artifacts badly arranged.  Boy, was I
  19.     wrong!  The California ecology section is intelligently laid
  20.     out, taking you on a trip zone-by-zone from coast to desert.  Be
  21.     sure to start with the big relief map of California.  You press
  22.     a button and a short slide show is projected on the relief map,
  23.     so that at different points you see political boundaries, water
  24.     flow, biotic zones, etc.  Best part for me was California
  25.     history.  Very well done -- there's not just a few Native
  26.     American baskets, there's a set of a dozen or so of the same
  27.     size and shape with information on which would have been
  28.     considered good and bad examples by the makers and users, and
  29.     why.  Not just gold rush artifacts, but a complete assayer's
  30.     office.  And -- motss relevance -- the 20th century section 
  31.     includes some gay stuff.  Be sure to check out the hypermedia
  32.     terminals, three of them spread out through the historty
  33.     section.  They'll call up information on any of the artifacts,
  34.     and give you video snippets of oral history (one of them from a
  35.     gay rights activist, Serria I think) and commentary by
  36.     historians.  I didn't even get up to the art department.
  37.     Good book store, too.

  39.     Th Paramount Theater, Broadway near 20th -- An absolutely
  40.     astonishing Art Deco movie palace.  Many, though not all,
  41.     Friday evenings they show a classic film complete with a cartoon
  42.     and an old newsreel.  Not to be missed!  Motss relevance:

  45.     Holmes Books, 14th a few blocks east of Bway -- a huge, dusty
  46.     used book store.  No real motss relevance.
