  13. The EBS failed completely after the 1989 earthquake.  I never heard
  14. so much as one tone.  KCBS returned to the air a few minutes after 
  15. the quake, but there was no EBS announcement.  (Although they did make 
  16. some of their own emergency announcements, such as "please turn off your 
  17. gas if you smell something" etc.)

  19. There was also a lot of false news being broadcast.  Channel
  20. 7 (KGO) reported that the Valley Fair Mall in San Jose had collapsed,
  21. as well as collapses of the 280/Magdalena and 101/University overpasses.
  22. After an entire evening of watching TV, I heard nothing of the EBS.

  24. I guess we all learned a lesson about what happens when major
  25. communications systems are disrupted.  I'm glad I have my
  26. 2 meter ham radio in my car.
