- The EBS failed completely after the 1989 earthquake. I never heard
- so much as one tone. KCBS returned to the air a few minutes after
- the quake, but there was no EBS announcement. (Although they did make
- some of their own emergency announcements, such as "please turn off your
- gas if you smell something" etc.)

- There was also a lot of false news being broadcast. Channel
- 7 (KGO) reported that the Valley Fair Mall in San Jose had collapsed,
- as well as collapses of the 280/Magdalena and 101/University overpasses.
- After an entire evening of watching TV, I heard nothing of the EBS.

- I guess we all learned a lesson about what happens when major
- communications systems are disrupted. I'm glad I have my
- 2 meter ham radio in my car.
