- After writing an in-house style guide (which covers "everything"; it took
- over a year of background-level work), I boiled down several authoritative
- sources into this ruling on between and among:
-
- An incorrect rule that is often cited is that "among" relates to
- more than two people or things, and "between" is limited to two.
-
- The difference between these two words is one of definite relation:
- if a definite relation is involved, use "between." If there is no
- explicit relationship stated, and when distribution is stressed,
- use "among."
-
- Examples:
-
- Connect a cable between the two signal terminals. We must negotiate
- between marketing, engineering, and manufacturing.
-
- Select among the input channels to the right of the display screen.
- The budget was distributed among marketing, engineering, and
- manufacturing.
-
- Do not use "amongst"; this is not a word.
-
- So, authorities, did my research lead me astray? Does anyone have a formulation
- that makes the difference more clear and intuitive?
