  27. this reminds me of something i heard from someone once and i'd like
  28. some sort of confirmation.  i.e.: there is a very simple rule about
  29. when the apostrophe is used - ONLY for contractions - keeping
  30. in mind (and here's the part i'm worried about) that possessives
  31. such as "Doug's" and "the dog's" were, once, long ago, "Doug his" and
  32. "the dog its".

  34. can someone REALLY into the history of the language confirm or
  35. deny this for me?

  38. usenet style.  probably exactly the sort of thing this group hates.)
