-
- Implicit in SOUND and MUSIC is some things called TALENT and DESIRE.
- Talent in particular is something that has received little mention
- in this thread.
-
- You can make good music on virtually any equipment if you have enough
- talent and desire to do so.
-
- There are many persons who desire to sound a particular way, either
- an imitation of some band or their own interpretation of their
- influences. Persons who lack talent usually desire to sound like
- their favorite artists (no surprise here) and often turn to equipment
- to assist them in coming closer to the desired sound.
-
- People with talent are more likely to want to create their own sound
- which is a synthesis of different influences. They are also less likely
- to be concerned with owning synth xxx that artist yyy uses on song zzz.
-
- There is also a middle ground. A person who has both talent and a desire
- to emulate a particular sound. This person is justifiably interested in
- using the identical equipment as their artist-prototype because they may
- indeed be just as talented and capable.
-
- I find the desire to emulate can be carried to such an extent as to
- become creatively stifling. Concern over technique becomes primary
- and concern over making good music secondary. This is (I think) why
- Wilco notes, above, his preference for the cheap record over the
- expensive one.
-
- 'nuff said for now.
