- Summary: The enneagram describes personality types
- Keywords: Enneagram, personality
-
- Since this is alt.psychology.personality and not alt.meyersbriggs, I
- thought it would be nice to introduce a little variety into the
- discussion.
-
- Another paradigm for categorizing people by personality type is the
- Enneagram. The book that I have (recommended by Carol Erickson -
- daughter of Eric Erickson) is "Personality Types - Using the Enneagram
- for Self-Discovery", by Don Richard Riso.
-
- In this system, there are nine basic personality types. Each type
- can lean in two directions (wings) towards specific other types. Thus,
- there are essentially two subtypes to each type which has some
- characteristics of the two other types. Further, when the personality
- becomes progressively more healthy or unhealthy, it will move toward
- adopting characteristics of another type. This sounds complicated, and
- is hard to describe without a drawing, but here goes a short attempt.
- The enneagram is kind of a nine-pointed star. The points of the star
- are the nine basic personality types. The lines connecting the points
- show which personality types will be moved toward when a given type
- becomes more or less healthy. The wings are the points to either side
- of a given point. To see this clearly, it would be best to get a
- book and look at the picture and read it.
-
- Now, a brief description of the nine basic types:
-
- THE FEELING TRIAD
- Type Two: The Helper
- Type Three: The Status Seeker
- Type Four: The Artist
-
- THE DOING TRIAD
- Type Five: The Thinker
- Type Six: The Loyalist
- Type Seven: The Generalist
-
- THE RELATING TRIAD
- Type Eight: The Leader
- Type Nine: The Peacemaker
- Type One: The Reformer
-
- That's enough typing for now! ;-)
- I hope someone else can add to this description.
