- There ARE "steelhead" in the Great Lakes (all of them). They were
- transplanted using Pacific stock, and are genetically different from
- non-migratory "rainbow trout". Same for King (Chinook), Coho, and
- Pink Salmon which were also transplanted. I dare say that the
- steelhead/Salmon sports fishing in the great lakes surpasses that of
- the West Coast as far as the number of fishermen who pursue them.
-
- Because the freshwater steelhead can actually reproduce, they are now
- naturally different (by a very small degree) than the original stock.
-
- Note that "steelhead" is layman's term and is descriptive of their
- color upon entering the stream/river, so let's not get too pedantic.
-
- We also have Atlantic Salmon (which is actually a trout!), brown trout
- that follow the same migratory pattern as the steelhead, and splake
- (lake trout/brook trout cross-breed). I hear that in Lake Michican
- there is a strain of steelhead called Skamania which are amazing
- fighters.
-
- The main difference between Great Lakes and West Coast fishing that I
- see is the fact that to us 'Lakers' the West Coast guys seem to be
- using tackle more appropriate for fishing for Florida largemouths with
- foot long shiners (Flame! Flame! ;-)
