- Here are my votes for the funniest scenes from Blandings Castle, and
- Lord Emsworth.
-
- 1. Someone asked the name of the secretary to Lord Emsworth who ended
- up being caught out in the night wearing lemon-colored pajamas - its
- Rupert Baxter. Personally, I think thats one of the greatest, funniest
- scenes ever. Rupert Baxter being of the practical mind is unable to
- soothe his soul on the wonderful offerings of nature, the gently
- fragrant flowers, the pale moonlight, and all that sort of rot, you
- know. Ergo, he ends up flinging flowerpots through Clarence Emsworth's
- window. Bad-guy though he is, Baxter is subjected to unspeakable
- and completely hilarious ignominies in that story - I believe it was
- Blandings Castle.
-
- 2. In "Leave it to Psmith", after the chrysanthemum-cabbage incident so well
- described by Kannan, Freddie travels to Market Blandings in the train,
- and somehow or ther other finds a suitcase has landed on his midriff.
- I believe he is not at his verbal peak at that point, and merely says
- "Gaa" several times. I double up *every* time I read that.
-
- 3. The crown IMO belongs to a short story called "Lord Emsworth, and the
- Girl-friend". On Connie's urging, Lord Emsworth agrees to take part in
- some village fest, (with top-hat!); and goes inviting people. There he gets
- nailed by a dog, whom he addresses as "Sir" (the dog)
- while dancing with the cane. The little girl that subdues the dog, also
- bites Connie, ends up as Lord Emsworth's pal, and pumps enough backbone
- in him to confront not just Connie, but even the fearsome Angus McAllister,
- the head gardener. A Capital Story. In fact, the mother of all Capital
- Stories. Trivia question: when else does Lord Emsworth confront Connie?
